Current Information
The City of Cornelia has a rich history that you can explore.  We have museums such as the Telephone musuem, Elvis musuem, the lovely Train Depot with actual artifacts, the Community House, the Chenocetah Fire Tower and more. 
 
If you want to shop or dine, Cornelia's downtown has unique places for you!  For your convenience, we also are the home of many retail chains.
 
Please take the time to visit a little bit of history in our charming city.
 
The Depot

The Depot is a train lovers delight.  The museum has artifacts from Southern Railway Co. and the Tallulah Falls Railroad Co.  Also on the site are two restored cabooses and The Big Red Apple.
 
 
 
  
The Community House
601 Wyly St, Cornelia
 
A handsome stone & log structure built by the CCC in 1936 and listed on the National Register.  The Community house is available for meetings, weddings... Also on the property is the Hilliard Wilbanks memorial honoring Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Captain Hilliard A Wilbanks.  The adjoining park features picnic areas, playground equipment, walking trails...
 
 
 
 

The Cornelia Library

The Library has over 30,000 books, audio books, DVDs, magazines, area newspapers...  We also offer services such as internet access, photo copying, faxing.  For the pre-school children we have Story Hour on Thursdays (call to verify schedule)  Come visit our great staff!



Chenocetah Fire Tower
Hwy 123 East, Cornelia
 
Built by the WPA (Works Progress Administration) in 1936 for the Chattahoochee National Forest, the stone tower is 40' high with a 14' x 14' wood cab
covered by a 15' high peaked slate roof that curves slightly at the eaves. It was first dedicated on June 7, 1938, and again after World War II in memory of three forest workers who died during the war.

In active service as a fire tower until 1975, it was unused until 1989 when the Georgia Forestry Commission took over staffing during the fire season. The tower has been adopted by people living in residential areas near the mountain who have formed the "Chenocetah Conservation Corps" to provide grounds maintenance. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

 
 
 
The Habersham County Historical Society (and Telephone Musuem)

The Historical Society Museum is now open the 1st Saturday of every month from 2pm-4pm.  The building houses an extensive collection of telephone equipment and information as well as historical maps of the county and surrounding areas.
The telephone equipment is from Standard Telephone and encompasses the years 1876 to present.  One of the special items is a telephone receiver that was patented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876.
 
Other items from the County include an 1870 signed quilt, 1890 copper bathtub, 1900 portable dental chair, saddle tree, local newspapers and more.
 
 


Loudermilk Boarding House & Elvis Museum

Built in 1908 and listed on The National Register of Historic Places features Joni Mabe’s Panoramic Encyclopedia of Everything Elvis. See the legendary Elvis’ Wart & the "Maybe Elvis Toenail".  Museum contains over 30,000 Elvis items -largest in the world and most unique. Listed in Guinness' World Book of Records.

Museum has Elvis gift shop. Big E Festival held first Saturday in August.

Lake Russell

The Lake Russell Recreation Area is located in the Chattahoochee National Forest near Cornelia.  It has 3 nice hiking trails available for hiking year-round.  The Lake Russell Trail is a 4.6 mile loop that goes around the rhore of this beautiful 100 acre lake.  The Ladyslipper Trail is a nice 6.2 mile hike that loops through the forest behind Nancytown Lake.  The Sourwood Trail is a 2.7 mile loop trail which features a nice little waterfalls "Nancytown Falls" at the 1.5 mile mark.
 
 
Directions: On U.S. 123 East of Cornelia, near the Mt. Airy, GA railroad bridge, turn onto the Lake Russell Recreation Area access road. Drive about 2.5 miles to the parking lot at Nancytown Lake.
